Halina Brukner, MD
Halina Brukner, MD is Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Medical School Education at the University of Chicago. In her role as Associate Dean, Dr. Brukner oversees academic affairs for Medical students at the Pritzker School of Medicine. Currently serving as Co-Chair of The Pritzker Initiative: A Curriculum for the 21 st Century, Dr. Brukner is leading the effort to evaluate and transform the Pritzker School’s curriculum to meet the changing health paradigms of the new century.
Dr. Brukner graduated with honors from Yale College in 1978. She received her MD from the New York University School of Medicine, where she graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. After completing her residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals in 1985, she joined the faculty that same year. She served as Director of the University of Chicago Primary Care Group from 1995-1999 and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Medicine from 1999-2004, before beginning her Associate Dean position in 2005. In her twenty-year career at the University of Chicago, Dr. Brukner has established herself as a national leader in clinical Medical education and faculty development.
Considered one of the best clinician-educators in the country, Dr. Brukner has been recognized both locally and nationally for her clinical skills and contribution to Medical education. She has been named by her peers as one of the “Best Doctors in America” six times. In addition, she’s been recognized in “Doctors Across America” and “Guide to America’s Top Physicians” as one of the nation’s best doctors. Currently, she serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Women’s Medical Association.
A leader in clinical education, Dr. Brukner received the SGIM National Clinician-Educator Award for Innovation in Medical Education in 1998. As an educator, Dr. Brukner has been instrumental in developing the clinical skills of the Pritzker School of Medicine’s students. She served as Co-Course Director for Introduction to Clinical Medicine, Clinical Skills I and the Junior Clerkship in Medicine for nine years. In recognition of her scholarship and leadership, Dr. Brukner was the Convocation Speaker at the University of Chicago’s graduation in 2003.
Committed to developing faculty interest in Medical education, Dr. Brukner is Director of the University of Chicago Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators.
