Stephen Meredith, MD, PhD

Dr. Stephen C. Meredith MD, PhD is an Professor in the Departments of Pathology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and The College of the University of Chicago. One of the most highly lauded educators at the University of Chicago, Dr. Meredith is known for his commitment to teaching and his multidisciplinary approach to education. As an instructor of two required courses at the Pritzker School of Medicine, Dr. Meredith makes a significant and meaningful contribution to Medical education.

Dr. Meredith graduated with honors from Brandeis University with a dual degree in Biology and English literature before receiving his Medical degree from Washington University in 1974. He joined the University of Chicago faculty in 1979 after completing his residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals in anatomic pathology. He went on to receive his PhD in biochemistry in 1982 from the University.

An author of over 65 original articles, Dr. Meredith’s research studies the structure of beta-amyloid fibrils to better diagnose and treat neurological disorders. His work has been funded by the National Institute of Health, the Alzheimer’s Association and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, for which he received an Interdisciplinary Science Award. In addition, he serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for multiple journals, and is on the Editorial Board for Laboratory Investigation.

Dr. Meredith’s teaching is known for both its breadth and excellence. Currently he teaches Biochemistry 301 and Medical Biology 302 to Medical school students, Pathology and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to graduate students, and James Joyce literature courses to undergraduates. For each endeavor, he has received numerous accolades. Pritzker School graduating seniors have recognized Dr. Meredith with their “Favorite Faculty” award every single year for the last thirteen years (1992-2005). They elected him to Alpha Omega Alpha honors in 1996. He received the University of Chicago’s Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching in 1994. And in 2005, he received the University of Chicago’s Quantrell Award for best Undergraduate Teaching.

Dr. Meredith’s leadership in Medical education extends well beyond the classroom. He has served on numerous academic committees including the Committee on the Re-appointment of Assistant Professors, and the Graduate Student Affairs Committee for the Department of Pathology, among others. In honor of his many contributions to the field of Medical education, Dr. Meredith was named one of the six inaugural members of the University of Chicago Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators.
