Pritzker Student, Faculty Showcase Their Work at the 2007 AAMC Annual Meeting

November 9, 2007 - Numerous members of the Pritzker School of Medicine community attended the recent Association of American Medical Colleges Annual Conference held in Washington, DC, and two key representatives from the school highlighted some of the innovative programming and research that can be found at Pritzker.

Dr. Shalini Reddy, Associate Professor of Medicine and Assistant Dean for Student Programs, presented the paper “Third-year Medical Students’ Participation in and Perceptions of Unprofessional Behaviors” during the Assessing Professionalism RIME Paper Presentation session. Dr. Reddy was the first author on this paper that looked at how students’ views regarding professionalism change throughout the course of their time in medical school, namely as they participate in their clerkship years. Drs. Jeanne Farnan, John Yoon, Holly Humphrey, Vineet Arora, Gaurav Upadhyay, and fourth-year student Troy Leo also contributed to this research.

Dean Shumway

Current second-year student Dean Shumway received the noteworthy distinction of selection to a five-person panel for the Student Programming Showcase. Dean presented the newly mandatory Health Disparities in America course, led by Dr. Monica Vela. The program began in the fall of 2006 as an elective course, but received such enthusiastic reviews that it is now a class that all students take at the beginning of their first year. Dean’s presentation highlighted the way in which the social context of medicine can be integrated into the basic and clinical sciences to help prepare Pritzker students, as the issue of health disparities is one that all future physicians will face.

The Annual Meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges gives an opportunity for those in the medical education world—administrators, faculty, leaders, and students—to present and discuss some of the most relevant issues of the day. This year’s meeting, held from November 2 through November 7, focused on Health in the Balance.
