Pritzker Faculty and Recent Graduate Publish Important Research on On-Call Resident Workload

Vineet Arora, MD and Emily Georgitis, MD'08

September 16, 2008—The most recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) features the article “Association of Workload of On-Call Medical Interns With On-Call Sleep Duration, Shift Duration, and Participation in Educational Activities,” written by recent graduate and current Internal Medicine resident Emily Georgitis, MD’08 and Associate Professor of Medicine Dr. Vineet Arora.

Their work together on this project began as a part of the NIH-funded Pritzker Summer Research Program, but continued long after the conclusion of the eleven-week project. Emily received a Fentress Fellowship during her fourth year to help support their ongoing research on this important issue.

Drs. Arora and Georgitis aimed to assess whether an increased on-call intern workload was associated with reductions in on-call sleep, increased total shift duration, and lower likelihood of participation in educational activities. The authors considered the possibility that a reduction of duty hours may result in an intensification in work with residents doing the same amount of work in less time.
