October 24, 2008—The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine is pleased to welcome Frederic Hafferty, PhD, Professor of Behavioral Sciences at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, as the keynote speaker of the 2008 Medical Education Day. Medical Education Day, which will be held on October 24, highlights the innovation and research in medical education taking place at the University, offering a time for students, residents, and faculty to showcase their work.

Dr. Hafferty, one of the pioneering voices of professionalism in medicine, will deliver his keynote speech “Professionalism as a Social Movement and Conflict of Interest as an Intervening Factor” at 12:00 p.m. P117, located in the University of Chicago Medical Center. As a sociologist, Dr. Hafferty has been observing the trends in medical education for more than three decades and has been widely published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Academic Medicine, Journal of Medical Education, and has also written multiple books on the subject of professionalism in medicine. Dr. Hafferty’s work delves into the “hidden curriculum” of medical education, a concept suggesting that students gather a deep understanding of how to practice medicine by their exposure to the on-the-job tendencies–both good and bad–of their superiors throughout their clinical experiences.

Dr. Hafferty’s remarks will be followed by a poster session and plenary poster presentation given by students, residents, and faculty at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. The event will also include the induction of our 2008 Fellows of the University of Chicago Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators:

  • Vineet Arora, MD, MA, Assistant Professor of Medicine
  • Javad Hekmatpanah, MD, Professor of Neurological Surgery, Professor of Neurology and Cancer Research
  • Kevin Roggin, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery
  • Callum Ross, PhD, Associate Professor of Organismal Biology and Anatomy
  • Sandra Valaitis, MD, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology
