March 14, 2008—The Pritzker School of Medicine recently honored faculty, students, and residents at the annual Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Society induction ceremonies.

Pritzker faculty and staff, as well as the families of the honorees, gathered together on February 26, 2008 in Ida Noyes Hall to commemorate the members of the 2008 Alpha Omega Alpha (ΑΩΑ) Honor Medical Society. ΑΩΑ recognizes those fourth-year medical students who achieve excellence in academic performance, leadership, and service. Chosen by the Academic Honors Committee during the fall of their fourth year, the recipients of ΑΩΑ distinction then collectively choose alumni, faculty, and residents to receive the honor alongside them.

This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Michael Collins, an orthopaedic surgeon at Hinsdale Orthopaedic Association and author of the book Hot Lights, Cold Steel: Life, Death and Sleepless Nights in a Surgeon’s First Years. Dr. Collins spoke about the journey each student embarks upon after completing medical school, and urged students to appreciate the journey as an experience full of opportunity, rather than viewing success as only achieved once the goal is reached.

One week later on March 4, 2008, Pritzker students were celebrated for their outstanding demonstration of compassion and professionalism at the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) Induction. Dr. Kevin Roggin from the Department of Surgery and fourth-year student David Beckmann received particular distinction through the Leonard Tow Award, which recognizes one faculty member and one graduating senior who exemplify the ideals of the Gold Foundation. Dr. Michael Mendoza from the Department of Family Medicine was chosen to present the keynote speech in which he discussed not only the intrinsic value of the humanistic practice of medicine, but of the sustaining powers of serving as a humanistic physician.
