April 7, 2009—Dr. Neil Shubin, Robert R. Bensley Professor of Organismal Biology and Anatomy, Associate Dean for Organismal Biology and Anatomy, and Provost of Chicago’s Field Museum will serve as Chairman for the 2009 Senior Scientific Session, an annual event in which graduating fourth-year students showcase their scholarly work for a panel of faculty judges.

This year, more than 40 members of the Class of 2009 will participate in the Senior Scientific Session, held on May 7 in the Biological Sciences Learning Center. Throughout the course of the day, nine students will give oral presentations of their work, followed by a poster session featuring all participants’ research. The event will culminate with an awards ceremony in which Dr. Shubin will recognize those students whose research is deemed most meritorious.

Dr. Shubin is a renowned fish paleontologist whose discovery, Tiktaalik roseae, has been dubbed the “missing link” between fish and land animals. He has also done important work on the developmental biology of limbs. The evolution of limbs is Shubin’s specific area of expertise.
