October 20, 2008—Olufunmilayo ("Funmi") Olopade, MD, FACP, Associate Dean for Global Health and Professor of Medicine and Human Genetics at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, was recently inducted into the National Academy of Science. Dr. Olopade was inducted as one of 65 new members and five foreign associates elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) for 2008. This prestigious honor recognizes her prominence as international leader in cancer genetics and breast cancer research. Membership in the Institute is considered “one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievements and commitment to service,” according to the IOM. The Institute’s members serve without compensation in conducting studies and other activities on matters of significance to health.

Dr. Olopade assumed the newly created role of Associate Dean for Global Health on July 1, 2008. This new role helps to address the ever-increasing importance of this issue. Given the opportunities available, Dr. Olopade will serve in a coordinating and advisory role to the many faculty members who have developed well-respected independent research programs and to our many students who voice an increasing interest in this growing field of study.

Dr. Olopade came to the University of Chicago as a postdoctoral fellow in Hematology/Oncology in 1987 and was appointed to the faculty in 1991. She has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the ASCO Young Investigator Award, the James S. McDonnell Foundation Scholar Award, the Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award, and the MacArthur Foundation Genius Award in 2005.
