Carrie Dunphy, Dr. Vineet Arora, Vivian Chang

July 1, 2006 — Dr. Vineet Arora’s research on the benefits of naps for medical residents recently appeared in the local and national press. Medical students Carrie Dunphy and Vivian Chang served as co-authors along with Dean for Medical Education Holly Humphrey and faculty member David Meltzer. The study was published in the June 2006 edition of the Annals of Internal Medicine and received coverage in the Chicago Sun Times. Dr. Arora is the Assistant Dean for Curricular Affairs at the Pritzker School of Medicine.

Dr. Arora’s research team is the first to assess the benefits of naps for residents during extended on-call shifts. The study found that creating protected times when residents could sleep led to substantial improvements in fatigue, sleep quality and ability to care for their patients. The study was funded by the Department of Medicine and the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. More information on Dr. Arora’s findings can be found by following the links below .
