AMA President Dr. Ronald M. Davis to Present Deans’ Distinguished Lecture

The President of the American Medical Association (AMA), Ronald M. Davis, AM’81, MD’83 will present a Deans’ Distinguished Lecture on Wednesday, January 30th at 5:00 pm in the University of Chicago Medical Center. The event is co-sponsored by the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and the Harris School of Public Policy Studies. Dr. Davis's forty minute lecture will be followed by a question and answer session.
Dr. Davis assumed the AMA presidency in June 2007 after a long and distinguished career as a public health official. Board certified in preventative medicine, Dr. Davis previously served as Medical Director for the Michigan Department of Public Health and Director of the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) Office on Smoking and Health.
His career at the AMA began in 1984 when he became the first resident physician member on the AMA Board of Trustees. He served in this role until 1987. He returned to the AMA Board of Trustees in 2001 and was re-elected in 2005. During this time, he chaired the Board Finance and Audit Committees, was AMA representative to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization’s Board of Commissioners, and AMA liaison to the Advisory Committee for Injury Prevention and Control at the CDC.
Currently, Dr. Davis is Director of the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. Dr. Davis has received many awards and honors, including the Surgeon General’s Medallion, the American Public Health Association’s Jay S. Drotman Memorial Award, and the American College of Preventive Medicine’s Distinguished Service Award.
Dr. Davis received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. He completed his medical degree at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1983 and received his master’s degree in public policy in 1981.
