AMA Foundation Honors Third-Year Student as Emerging Leader in Medicine

Ed Gometz, MSIII

February 4, 2008 – Ed Gometz, a third-year medical student at the Pritzker School of Medicine, has been named a recipient of the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation’s 2008 Leadership Award. This award provides medical students, residents/fellows, early career physicians, and established physicians from around the country with special training to develop their skills as future leaders in organized medicine.

The AMA Foundation will honor 56 individuals—15 of whom are medical students—with the award at its annual Excellence in Medicine Awards ceremony on March 31st in Washington, DC. Presented in association with the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative, recipients of the award are recognized for demonstrating outstanding non-clinical leadership skills in advocacy, community service, and education.

As a medical student, Ed has been an active leader in the AMA. He serves as a Pritzker delegate to the AMA, and, along with fourth-year student and alternate delegate Joe Novak, wrote a resolution to the AMA that would acknowledge NASA's role in the advancement of healthcare technologies. This resolution was adopted in 2007 and is now integrated into AMA policy. Ed was recently elected by fellow student delegates from other medical schools to be a regional delegate from the medical student section of the AMA. In that position, Ed is 1 of 20 medical students nationwide who vote in the AMA's physician House of Delegates, which makes AMA policies.

Ed is a founding member of the Hopkins Biotech Network, a national student-run organization that promotes education, career development, and networking in the field of biotechnology. Ed also spearheaded an innovative new internship program with Abbott Laboratories and helped organize a medical mission to distribute recovered medicine and medical supplies from the US to rural areas of Peru through the University’s REMEDY chapter.
