Medical Education Day

First Annual Medical Education Day

On April 21, 2006, the six inaugural members of the Pritzker School of Medicine’s Academy of Distinguished Educators were honored at the first annual Medical Education Day. In celebration of their achievements, activities took place throughout the day at the Medical Center. These included a keynote address, poster and workshop sessions and an awards ceremony. The Academy, which is directed by Associate Dean of Medical School Education, Dr. Halina Brukner, was established in January to support and promote research, innovation, and scholarship in medical education.

The day began when nearly 200 Pritzker School of Medicine students, faculty and staff attended Dr. Molly Cooke’s keynote address entitled Why Teaching is Important and What Important Teachers Do. Dr. Cooke is the Director of UCSF’s Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators and is considered the preeminent national leader in medical education and a national expert on H I V ethics. In her address, Dr. Cooke stressed that learning medicine is not merely the process of mastering a large body of information, but also requires a transformation of identity from student to physician. Dr. Cooke highlighted inaugural Academy member Dr. Mark Siegler as one of the many important teachers that played an integral role in her own career.

Following Dr. Cooke’s address, attendees had their choice of attending one of the five workshops or the poster session. Several medical school students joined faculty members in presenting their research, including fourth year students Pilar Ortega, who presented her workshop, Working with a Medical Interpreter, and Sam Seiden whose research, Effect of a Student Duty Hours Policy on the Teaching and Satisfaction of Third Year Medical Students, was one of four outstanding abstracts chosen for oral presentation at the Plenary Session.

The event was capped off with an awards ceremony honoring the six inaugural members of the academy and L.D.H. Wood Teaching Scholar Award recipient, Dr. Bruce Gewertz.

The six inaugural members were chosen based on their extraordinary contributions to the field of medical education, through distinguished teaching, mentorship, and scholarship. To read profiles of the following six honorees, click their names below:
