Gold Humanism Honor Society Welcomes New Members

Mindy Schwartz

Mindy Schwartz, MD; Assistant Professor of Medicine

On March 8, 2007, eighteen members of the Pritzker School of Medicine Class of 2007 were inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Below is an excerpt from Dr. Mindy Schwartz’s introduction of the ceremony. Dr. Schwartz is the Faculty Advisor to the Pritzker School of Medicine Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society .

For those who are unfamiliar with this organization, Arnold P. Gold, a New York based pediatric neurologist and his wife Sandra founded the Arnold P. Gold Foundation in 1988 with a focus to emphasize a culture of humanism and caring in medicine. What started out as a small organization is now a powerful voice in American medicine and medical education. The GHHS — the Gold Humanism Honor Society — was initially founded in 2001 and now has chapters at over 60 medical schools in the US and throughout the world.

The GHHS seeks to honor senior medical students, residents and role-model physician teachers who demonstrate excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service. The Gold Foundation designed a survey with questions that target those traits that reflect a patient-oriented approach and a commitment to professionalism and humanism. The questions include:

  • Who would you like by your side in an emergency?
  • Who best embodies the quote — the secret of good patient care lies in caring for the patient?
  • Which of your classmates has the best listening skills with patients?
  • Who would you want as the doctor for yourself or a loved one?

Our medical students understand what this honor truly means. They selected these students to receive this honor. They are well aware of the remarkable group of students who are both their peers and, more importantly, their friends. These 18 are the tip of the iceberg of wonderful, dedicated and compassionate students who are also deserving.

These are the kind of individuals that give one optimism for the future.
