Pritzker Student Wins AMA Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship
Colin Walsh
August 19, 2007 - Colin Walsh, a rising fourth-year medical student at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, is a recipient of the prestigious Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship, awarded by the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation. As one of only twelve medical students in the country, Colin will receive a $10,000 scholarship in recognition of his academic achievement. Colin’s award specifically recognizes his interest in “the communication of science.” Recipients were nominated by their medical school dean and chosen by a selection committee.
Walsh, from Madison, NJ, is an active participant in medical school and the community. He has been instrumental in developing student mentorship programs and cutting-edge technologies that have been invaluable to the University of Chicago. Walsh’s commitment to advancing education and his outstanding academic and research background has lead to the development of a new undergraduate course “Immersive Virtual Anatomy” that utilizes visualization technology rather than human cadavers. His work has been published in multiple health technology and medical journals. Walsh also works closely with his school leaders to disperse funds to campus-wide student organizations. He has been active within the community as a volunteer for HIPCorps, an HIV/AIDS education program that targets elementary to high school students on the south side of Chicago.
“Colin Walsh is an example of the dedication to medicine and to the well-being of others that characterizes the best physicians,” said AMA Foundation President Barbara Rockett, MD. “He has already distinguished himself as a leader and we believe he will make many strong contributions to the profession.”
The AMA Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the American Medical Association, and works to advance the health care of America through programs in medical education, research and public health.
