Pritzker School of Medicine to Welcome New Students at Annual White Coat Ceremony

July 28, 2009—On Saturday, August 8th, 2009 the Pritzker School of Medicine will welcome 88 new students to its ranks at the annual White Coat Ceremony which will take place at 4:00pm in the Rockefeller Chapel. Dr. Olufunmilayo (“Funmi”) Olopade, MD, FACP, Associate Dean for Global Health and Professor of Medicine and Human Genetics at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine will serve as the ceremony’s keynote speaker.
The annual ceremony began at the school in 1990 as a way to mark the formal induction of first year medical students’ entry into the medical profession. Since that time, the White Coat Ceremony has spread across the country and is now practiced at nearly every medical school across the country.The ceremony honors students’ lifetime commitment to blending knowledge, excellence, and compassion as physicians. During the ceremony students’ recite the Hippocratic Oath before their family, friends, and new colleagues.
Funmi Olopade, MD, FACP
The keynote speaker, Dr. Olopade is an international leader leader in cancer genetics and breast cancer research. Dr. Olopade came to the University of Chicago as a postdoctoral fellow in Hematology/Oncology in 1987 and was appointed to the faculty in 1991. She has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the ASCO Young Investigator Award, the James S. McDonnell Foundation Scholar Award, the Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award, and the MacArthur Foundation Genius Award in 2005. Dr. Olopade assumed the newly created role of Associate Dean for Global Health on July 1, 2008 and was inducted into the National Academy of Science in October 2008.
