Roadmap to Professionalism
The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine’s Roadmap to Professionalism was launched in 2005 to increase awareness of professionalism at every level of medical education and to integrate education professionalism initiatives throughout the University of Chicago Medical Center. The committee coordinates institution-wide research initiatives on the topic of medical professionalism and presents professionalism workshops to faculty, residents and students annually. The steering committee’s work builds on the strong foundation provided from the MacLean Center for Medical Ethics, the nation’s first center for clinical medical ethics.
In recent years, the Committee has been tackling difficult professionalism issues such as how to teach students and residents about conflict of interest and industry relationships, the interface between professionalism and digital media, and understanding and improving the learning environment for students, residents, and faculty at Pritzker.
Peer Role Model Awards
During the 2008–2009 academic year, The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine’s Professionalism Steering Committee created the Peer Role Model Awards to encourage the development of professionalism across the spectrum of medical education. Both awards are determined through a peer nomination email survey.
- Faculty Physician Peer Role Model Award
The Faculty Physician Peer Role Model award is intended to recognize the physician faculty member who best exemplifies the qualities of medical professionalism. These qualities include dedication to serving the interest of the patient and maintaining the highest standards of professional competence and integrity. - Pre-Clinical Student Peer Role Model Award
This award is intended to recognize the rising third year student who best exemplifies professionalism through his/her compassion, leadership, and dedication to others.
Dr. P. Allan Klock, Jr. and Minna Chen, MS 3
Dr. P. Allan Klock, MD, Professor of Anesthesia & Critical Care and Minna Chen, MS 2 received the first annual Peer Role Model awards.
In the 2009–2010 academic year, the professionalism steering committee plans to expand the Peer Role Modeling Awards to include an Excellence in Mentoring Award which will honor basic science/clinical faculty members who have played a key role in mentoring medical students and faculty.
