Student Loans

The Pritzker School of Medicine Office of Financial Aid recommends that students work with one of five providers to obtain student loans. Below you will find links to recommended lenders for Stafford loans, Grad-Plus, and International Student loans.

In response to our students' questions we developed a list of recommended lenders we work with most frequently. Lenders are recommended because of a history of success in working with medical school students and their unique borrowing needs and because of their outstanding level of service. For example, some of the features offered by the recommended lenders include competitive rates on Grad Plus loans, a splash webpage adequate for students to receive more information about products and to apply online, and impeccable service during school and repayment. We also recommend lenders with borrower benefits that are proven to be realized by their borrowers, and lenders who will maintain their portfolio and not sell off our student loans now or at any time in the immediate future. You may borrow from the lender of your choice, and are not required to use the lenders the University recommends. The University will offer the same assistance to you regardless of your choice of lender, and will process the documents required to obtain a loan from any eligible lender that you select. Services to you will depend on the capabilities of each lender.

Stafford Loans

A Stafford loan is the primary source utilized by students to finance their medical education. Stafford Loans are federal loans which have a fixed 6.8% interest rates. They may be either subsidized or unsubsidized. The government will pay the interest on a Subsidized Stafford Loan during the in-school period. The Unsubsidized Stafford Loan accrues interest while you are in school. The Office of Financial Aid will determine your eligibility for these loans. Students may use the school’s recommended lenders or a lender of their choice.

Grad-Plus Loans

The Grad-plus loan is a federal loan available to graduate and professional students. Grad-plus loans have a higher fixed interest rate than Stafford loans and do not offer a grace period. In addition, the interest on these loans is not subsidized.

International Student Alternative Loan

These alternative loan options are designed for International Students who are enrolled at the University of Chicago-Pritzker School of Medicine. Students have options if they have a co-signer or not.
