Student Support

All Pritzker students are supported by a broad network of faculty and staff. The Offices for Student Life and Multicultural affairs are two of the many entry points for students to access important services and information. The four faculty members who guide these offices, Drs. Herbert Abelson, Shalini Reddy, and Elizabeth Kieff for the Office for Student Life and Dr. William McDade for the Office of Multicultural Affairs are available to our students. Each faculty member has a unique role in assisting students throughout their time at Pritzker.

These four faculty are all outstanding resources for our medical students. They are part of the network of support provided by the many faculty deans and career advisors at the Pritzker School of Medicine who all serve as informed and effective advocates for students, as do the many University of Chicago faculty members who interact with medical students as teachers, preceptors, research mentors, and specialty advisors. The Office for Student Life supplements the important relationships students develop with the faculty by providing a specific resource dedicated to all aspects of medical student life at the University of Chicago.

About the Office of Multicultural Affairs

The Office of Multicultural Affairs, led by William A. McDade, MD, PhD, Associate Dean for Multicultural Affairs and Rosita Ragin, Assistant Dean for Multicultural Affairs, works to ensure a supportive academic environment for underrepresented minorities at our school. Among the nation's highest ranked medical schools, the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine has achieved one of the most diverse student bodies.

William A. McDade, MD, PhD
Associate Dean for Multicultural Affairs
Associate Professor of Anesthesia & Critical Care

Dr. McDade supports the Pritzker School of Medicine’s commitment to providing ample opportunities for diversity within the institution. The rich foundation for success that minority high school and college students will find in our pipeline programs is guided by Dr. McDade. This groundwork for success is continued into medical school, with his oversight of the Bowman Society. This group offers a forum for scholarship and the opportunity for mentorship, helping to support the continued professional and personal development of minority students and faculty members. Dr. McDade also serves on the Provost's Committee on Unlawful Harassment, as well as on the University of Chicago's Committee on Student Life. Both Assistant Dean Ragin and Dr. McDade hold advising meetings individually with each underrepresented minority student twice per year. Dr. McDade assumes the additional role of faculty advisor to the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) chapter as well as the American Medical Association-Medical Student Section (AMA-MSS) chapter at Pritzker.

About the Office for Student Life

The Office for Student Life is dedicated to supporting the personal and professional development of all students at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine by providing programs and services geared toward the development of happy and well-balanced physicians-in-training who will become competent, caring, and compassionate physicians.

The Office for Student Life works in concert with many other Pritzker programs, e.g. the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, as well as faculty who oversee specific programs in global health and community service learning.

Herbert T. Abelson, MD
Senior Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs
Office for Student Life
George M. Eisenberg Professor Emeritus and Chair Emeritus of Pediatrics

Dr. Abelson provides guidance and leadership throughout the fourth year as students navigate through the residency application process. In meeting with each graduating student on an individual basis, Dr. Abelson provides academic, career, and residency advising in collaboration with individual career advisors and communications staff. He is also an integral part of the Admissions process, and therefore works closely with all students as they enter into the school and as they prepare for the next stage of their medical education.

Shalini Reddy, MD
Associate Dean for Student Programs and Professional Development
Office for Student Life
Associate Professor of Medicine

Dr. Reddy oversees key aspects of student life throughout the duration of students’ medical school careers. She provides leadership and direction for student programs, encompassing student government and organizations, student events, and much of the professional development programming and oversight of professionalism curriculum. Dr. Reddy also guides the Pritzker Societies, which serve to provide career advising and mentoring, to help make resources easily and readily accessible, and to foster a sense of community within the larger Pritzker School of Medicine community.

 Elizabeth Kieff, MD
Assistant Dean for Student Affairs
Office for Student Life
Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience

Dr. Kieff’s role focuses on the interface of students' personal and professional lives. Because Pritzker prioritizes the well-being of its students, Dr. Kieff has spearheaded the creation and implementation of a four-year Wellness Curriculum, which is geared toward helping students obtain valuable skills and tools they can draw upon throughout their lives. She also provides guidance and is a resource for students dealing with personal issues related to their time at Pritzker, from key life transitions, such as marriage and children, to individual and community concerns students may have about their health and well-being.
