International Opportunities

Child Family Health International
Purpose: 4-8 week long international health-service learning opportunities in a variety of settings.
Eligibility: Medical students, residents and post-bacc pre-medical students
Costs: Students must pay for the cost of their own program.
Deadline: Apply at least 6 months in advance of when you plan to travel. Programs are filled on a first come-first serve basis.
Benjamin Kean Traveling Fellowship in Tropical Medicine
Purpose: The fellowship supports those who pursue clinical tropical medicine or tropical medicine research electives in areas afflicted by tropical diseases.
Eligibility: Must be a full-time student in a North American accredited school of medicine at the time of the application and at the time of the elective.
Funds: Awards vary

Doris Duke Clinical Research International Fellowship for Medical Students
Purpose: This program is designed to encourage medical students to pursue careers in clinical research by giving exceptional students the opportunity to take a year to experience clinical research first hand. For the years 2008-200 12 international slots are available medical students interested in pursuing research in Africa.
Eligibility: Medical students in good standing who have completed two or more years of medical school prior to the start of the fellowship.
Funds: $27,000 stipend; health insurance; financial support to attend annual CRF meeting, and supplementary research and training funds.

Fogarty International Center Clinical Research Scholars Program
Purpose: In partnership with the NIH, the Fogarty International Center offers a one-year clinical research training experience for graduate-level U.S. students in the health profession. This is an opportunity for highly motivated individuals to experience mentored research training at top-ranked NIH-funded research centers in developing countries such as Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, China, India, Peru, and others.
Eligibility: Graduate level U.S. students in health professions; also third-year medical students.
Deadline: December 14, 2007
Funds: Approximately $18,000–$20,000 per year with additional $6,000 for travel, insurance, and educational materials.
Friends of the Children of Haiti Clinic
Purpose: Team volunteers work side-by-side with experienced FOTCOH personnel, treating people who otherwise will go without any medical attention.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program
Purpose: To foster leadership, learning and empathy between cultures.
Eligibility: Recent college graduates, masters and doctoral candidates.
Funds: Subject to availability of federally-appropriated funds
Deadline: Due to the University of Chicago Fulbright Program Advisor (FPA) - Brooke Noonan - by October 1, 2007. FPA will submit an electronic copy and a hard copy to the Institute of International Education.
GHEC Carole Davis Fellowship
Purpose: To fund global health projects
Eligibility: Medical students and faculty who are either GHEC members or from a school that is an institutional member* of GHEC.
Funds: $500

Infectious Disease Society of North America-Summer Scholarships for Medical Students
Purpose: IDSA Education and Research Foundation offers summer scholarships to medical students with mentorship by an IDSA member or fellow. It is the responsibility of IDSA members and fellows to identify and solicit interested students
Eligibility: Any medical student interested in pursuing research activity on pediatric or adult infectious diseases. These activities may involve either clinical or research activities.
Funds: $2000

Interhealth South America
Purpose:

Introduction to Ecuadorian and South American primary and community health care, integrated with immmersion medical Spanish language instruction.

Eligibility: First and fourth-year medical students and primary care residents

Dates: First-year students: June 22-July 19, 2008; Fourth-year students and residents: February 3 - March 1, 2008

International Service Learning
Purpose: Presents unique and exciting opportunity for students to experience field cliinical work first hand in the rural and urban areas of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Belize, Mexico, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
Eligibility: Medical students.
Funds: Cost ranges from $985 to $1,985. (Financial aid available)

Luce Scholars Program
Purpose: The Luce Scholars Program awards scholarships and sends a select group of young scholars to various locations in Asia for a year in their field of interest.
Eligibility: American citizens with at least a bachelor's degree, no more than 29 at the time they enter the program and cannot have had significant exposure to Asian culture or Asian studies; strong leadership ability; potential for professional accomplishment within chosen field.
Funds: All expenses paid

MAP International Medical Fellowship
Purpose: The MAP International Medical Fellowship encourages lifelong involvement in global health issues by providing selected medical students firsthand exposure in a Christian context to the health, social and cultural characteristics of a developing world community.
Eligibility: Fourth-year medical students, residents, and interns
Funds: Fellowship covers approved round trip airfare. Students must pay room and board.
Deadline: March 1 - applications should be submitted during the academic year prior to travel
Unite for Sight International Volunteer Program
Purpose: Unite For Sight targets the more than 36 million people with undiagnosed and untreated cases of preventable blindness.
Eligibility: Volunteers interested in assisting interns and eye doctors in an international health setting.
Cost: Room and board
Deadline: Applications accepted on a rolling basis; apply at least five weeks before program starts
University of Chicago Human Rights Program Scholarship
Purpose: The Human Rights Internship Program offers a select group of Chicago students the opportunity to learn the skills and understand the difficulties inherent in putting human rights into practice.
Eligibility: Open to all University of Chicago students
