American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant
Purpose: To support an outstanding medical student or graduate student in the clinical health sciences in pursuing a cancer-related research program while in training.

Funds: $2,500

American College of Radiology Imaging Network
Purpose: National colonography trial at the University of Chicago in in charge of a sub-aim on extracolonic findings.
Eligibility: Medical students interested in outcomes research.

American Diabetes Association Medical Scholars Award (ADA)
Purpose: Awards provide support to medical students interested in clinical and basic science diabetes research
Funds: $30,000 a year for one year
Deadline: January 15, 2009 for July 1, 2009 funding.
American Diabetes Association Physician-Scientist Award (ADA)
Purpose: Awards provide support to medical students while pursuing a graduate degree in order to gain exposure to clinical science diabetes research.
Eligibility:
Funds: $30,000 a year for up to three years.
Deadline: January 15, 2008 for July 1, 2008 funding.
American Federation for Medical Research (AFMR) Clinical Training Research Fellowships
Purpose: 10-week fellowships are awarded to support the work of students who are focused in the area of clinical research
Eligibility: Medical students
Funds: $3,000 stiped for 10-week period
Deadline: March 26, 2007
American Geriatrics Society: Edward Henderson Student Award
Purpose: Funding to attend the Annual Meeting.
Eligibility: Student must have demonstrated a commitment to the field of geriatrics through leadership pertinent to geriatrics; initiation of new information of programs in geriatrics; or scholarship in geriatrics through original research or reviews
Funds: $500 travel stipend

American Heart Association: Medical Student Research Program
Purpose: To provide medical students who are potentially interested in a research career with an opportunity to explore a career that is broadly related to the cardiovascular area
Eligibility: All medical students, except first year.
Funds: $600/week stipend

AMA Foundation Seed Grant
Purpose: The Seed Grant Research Program provides grants for basic sicence, applied or clinical research projects in the following categories: Cardiovascular/Pulmonary Diseases; HIV/AIDS; Leukemia; Neoplastic Diseases, and Secondhand Smoke
Eligibility:

Medical students, residents and fellows

Funds: $2,500 to $5,000

American Osler Society: William B. Bean Student Research Award
Purpose: To support research in the broad areas of medical history and medical humanism.
Eligibility: Currently matriculated students.
Funds: $1,500 stipend and possibly up to $750 for travel to annual meeting.
Deadline: March 1, 2009
American Pediatric Society & Society for Pediatric Research
Purpose: To encourage and introduce gifted medical students to consider careers in research related to pediatrics. The program is specifically designed for students seeking a research opportunity at an institution other than their own medical school.
Eligibility: Medical students in good standing.
Funds: $4,270 stipend

Center for Disease Control: Applied Epidemiology Fellowship
Purpose: Funded by a grant from Pfizer, this 10-12 month fellowship provides medical students with an applied hands-on training experience in eidemiology and public health. Students will carry out epidemiologic analyses in areas such as birth defects, injury, chronic disease, infectious disease, environmental health, reproductive health and minority health.
Eligibility: Open to third and fourth-year students.
Funds: Stipend provided for living expenses.

Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship for Medical Students
Purpose: This program is designed to encourage medical students to pursue careers in clinical research by giving exceptional students the opportunity to take a year to experience clinical research first hand.
Eligibility: Medical students in good standing who have completed two or more years of medical school prior to the start of the fellowship.
Funds: $27,000 stipend; health insurance; financial support to attend annual CRF meeting, and supplementary research and training funds.

Graduate Women in Science
Purpose: To advance the participation and recognition of women in science and to foster research through grants, awards, and fellowships.
Eligibility: Enrolled as graduate student or engaged in post-doctoral research.
Funds: $5,000-$10,000

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI): Research Medical Training Program
Purpose: To support a year of full-time biomedical research training at an academic or nonprofit research in the United States (or abroad if the mentor is affiliated with a U.S. institution.
Eligibility: Medical or dental student
Funds: Annual stipend of $27,000, allowance of $5,500 and a research allowance of $5,500.

HHMI/NIH Research Scholars Program (Cloister Program)
Purpose: The program was established to give 42 outstanding students at U.S. medical schools an opportunity to receive research training at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland.

Illinois Department of Public Health-Alzheimer's Disease Research Fund
Purpose: This fund supports research on the causes, prevention, care, treatment, evaluation, cure, social and economic impacts of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.
Eligibility: Funding is grated to institutions, not individuals.
Funds: Research grants of up to $35,000 available for one year

Mayo Clinic Graduate School: Clinical Research Training Program
Purpose: To facilitate the development of clinical investigators among minority medical students.
Eligibility: Minority medical student, after second or third year of medical school.
Funds: $21,000 stipend

Myasthenia Gravis Foundation: Student Fellowship
Purpose: Fellowships awarded annually to current medical students intersted in the scientific basis of myasthenia gravis or related neuromuscular conditions, serving both to further scientific inquiries into the nature of these disorders and to encourage more research.
Eligibility: Current medical students.
Funds: up to $5,000

National Institutes of Health
Purpose: The NIH offers many funding opportunities of varying value and duration for medical students. See their website for information on the various programs offered.
NIDDK Medical Student Research Training Program
Purpose: The NIDDK Medical Student Research Training program is designed to provide a mentored research training experience for those medical students who are considering an academic research career.
Eligibility: Medical students in good standing who have completed at least one year of their medical school education and who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Students who have previously earned the Ph.D. degree are not eligible nor are students enrolled in the combined MD-PhD program.
Funds: Support will consist of a stipend at the current published predoctoral stipend level as well as $4200 for research support, health insurance, and $1000 for travel to a scientific meeting, if requested.

National Student Research Forum - April 23-25
Purpose: National forum for presentation of oustanding research by medical students.
Eligibility: All medical and graduate students participating in biomedical research are encouraged to submit abstracts.

NSF Pickwick Fellowship
Purpose: Provides funds to enable young researchers to devote full-time professional effort to mentored research in sleep or sleep disorders.
Eligibility: Candidates must have received either an MD, DVM, PhD or DO degree by the time the fellowship begins in July 2007. Applicants must be conducting research in recognized American or Canadian programs of study.
Funds: $36,996 to $45,048 plus $7,000 benefits

OREF Medical Student Summer Orthopaedic Research Fellowship
Purpose: Medical students need to identify an investigator with an ongoing orthopaedic research project.
Eligibility: Candidates must have received either an MD, DVM, PhD or DO degree by the time the fellowship begins in July 2007. Applicants must be conducting research in recognized American or Canadian programs of study.
Funds: $2,500 salary support

Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation Medical Student Research Fellowship Award
Purpose: The Sarnoff Fellowship Program offers medical students enrolled in US medical schools the opportunity to spend a year conducting intensive work in a biomedical research laboratory.

Funds: $27,500 stipend for 2009-2010 fellowship year

Society of Nuclear Medicine: Student Fellowship Awards
Purpose: Fellowships support students’ full-time participation in clincial and basic research activities in Nuclear Medicine.
