ΑΩΑ Helen H. Glaser Student Essay Award
Purpose: To encourage medical students to address nontechnical topics in medicine, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society instituted this competition to recognize and reward excellent and thoughtful student compositions.
Eligibility: Authors must be enrolled at medical schools with active chapters (Class of 2009 or later), but need not be members of ΑΩΑ. Only one entry may be submitted by an author.
Funds: $2,000 first; $750 second; $500 third. Honorable mention awards of $250 each.
Deadline: Entries must be postmarked no later than January 31, 2009, and sent by first-class mail, express mail, or by courier. Winners will be announced about May 1, 2009.
ΑΩΑ Pharos Poetry Competition
Purpose: To encourage medical students to write poetry on medical subjects, The Pharos has instituted this competition to recognize and reward excellent and thoughtful student compositions.
Eligibility: Authors must be enrolled at medical schools with active ΑΩΑ chapters (Class of 2009 or later), but need not be members of ΑΩΑ. Only one entry may be submitted by an author.
Funds: $500 first; $250 second; $100 third.
Deadline: Entries must be postmarked no later than January 31, 2009, and sent by first-class mail, express mail, or by courier. Winners will be announced about May 1, 2009.
Arnold P. Gold - Francis A. Velay Humanism in Medicine Essay Contest
Purpose: In 1,000 words or fewer, drawing on real life experiences explain "How Patients Teach Their Doctors about Humanism in Medicine"
Eligibility: Authors must be enrolled as a student at an accredited medical school.
Funds: $1,000 first; $500 second; $250 third
Process: Email both the entry form and your essay to essaycontest@gold-foundation.org with "2008 Essay Contest" in the subject line.
Deadline: Submissions should be sent no later than April 30, 2008.
Baylor College of Medicine 4th Annual Michael DeBakey Poetry Contest
Purpose: Poetry prize awarded to undergraduate medical student in honor of Michael DeBakey
Eligibility: Open to undergraduate medical students only.
Funds: $1000 for first prize, $500 for second, $250 for third
Process:

Submissions must be:

  • In English, original and unpublished or have not previously received a poetry award
  • Limited to two pages, double-spaced
  • Printed on 8.5 x 11 inch bond paper
  • Accompanied by a cover page with the following information: Current mailing and email address, phone and fax numbers, copy of photographed student i.d. card documenting medical school enrollment

CHEST Foundation Business Plan Competition
Purpose: To encourage teams of students to develop new and creative sustainable organizational models that will provide the informational and behavioral assistance required to substantially increase the identification, education, prevention, and treatment of asthma among underserved populations in Chicago.
Eligibility: Open to all University graduate and professional students
Funds: The winning team will receive $2,000 and the runner-up will receive $1,000.
Deadline: Groups or individuals competing can register by emailing Taurean Egan at t-egan@kellogg.northwestern.edu by February 15, 2008, with names and contact information of group members. Groups or individuals interested in competing should attend the information session at Northwestern University on January 28, 2008 to learn more about the competition.
Elsevier
Purpose: This is an essay-writing contest to share your thoughts on the importance of medical information.
Eligibility: Medical students.
Funds: $5,000 grand prize

Harvard Essay Contest: Relationship Between Students & Pharmaceutical Marketing
Purpose: To educate physicians and medical students about pharmaceutical marketing practices
Eligibility: Medical students
Funds:

Awards will be distributed into four regions (northeast, southeast, midwest, and west). In each region, 4 first prize winners receive $1000, 3 second prize winners receive $750, 5 third prize winners receive $500

Deadline: 5 pm EST February 29, 2008
KaiserEDU.org Student Essay Contest
Purpose: Select a health policy issue and a 2008 presidential candidate and identify the major policies or strategies that the Administration could develop to advance that issue.
Eligibility: Students enrolled in a degree-granting program at a university or college
Funds: $1,000
Deadline: March 17, 2008, 5pm EST
William Carlos Poetry Competition for Medical Students
Purpose: Poetry competition
Eligibility: Entrants must be enrolled in programs leading to the M.D. or D.O. degree. Each participating student is permitted three entries.
Funds: The top three poets will be awarded $300, $200, and $100
respectively
