Service Opportunities

AAMC Caring For Community Grant
Purpose: A national medical student project administered by the AAMC, with support from the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative (PMHI). This unique program focuses on projects initiated, developed, and operated primarily by medical students attending allopathic and osteopathic medical schools.
Eligibility: Medical students in allopathic and osteopathic medical schools are eligible to apply for Caring for Community Grants, with the signed support of their medical school institutions.
Funds: A variety of grants ranging from $3000–$30,000 are available. Please see website (above) for additional information.

ΑΩΑ Medical Student Service Project Award
Purpose: To aid the establishment or expansion of a medical student service project benefiting the medical school or the local community, and to recognize students who dedicate their time and effort to these endeavors.
Eligibility: Any medical student or group of students at a school with an active ΑΩΑ chapter. ΑΩΑ membership is not required. Only one proposal will be accepted from a school during an academic year.
Funds: The school will receive up to $2,000 per year, renewable for a second year up to $1,000 and a third year up to $500 to fund the project.
Process: Proposals must be submitted to ΑΩΑ Councilor Dean Humphrey for a letter of support.
Deadline: Applications will be accepted by the national office at any time / Internal deadline is December 31, 2008.
Arnold P. Gold Student Summer Service Fellowship
Purpose:

The Student Summer Service Fellowship is intended to provide students an opportunity to design and implement a service project addressing a public health need in an underserved community or population. The Foundation's goal is to provide an opportunity for students to work directly with patients and to become more compassionate, relationship-centered physicians.

Eligibility: Students of medicine or osteopathy
Funds: $3,000 stipend for a 10 week period

Chicago Area Schweitzer Program
Purpose: Provides educational opportunities through community service and suppport for aspiring health professionals at the graduate level who are dedicated to working with individuals and communities in the Chicago area that are currently underserved by the health care system.
Eligibility: Open to students enrolled at least part-time in a health-related, graduate-level, degree-granting program in the Greater Chicago area. (Only medical students who will be in their first, second, or fourth year are eligible.)
Funds: $2,000
Deadline: Friday, February 1, 2008 by 5:00 PM.
Christian Community Health Fellowship (CCHF)
Purpose: The CCHF is a national network of Christian health professionals and others concerned about the health care needs of impoverished communities in the U.S.

David E. Rogers Fellowship Program
Purpose: Rogers Fellowship projects are intended to focus on coupling medicine with the needs of the underserved or disadvantaged patients or populations.
Eligibility: Medical and dental students during the summer between the first and second year of school.
Funds: $3,500 stipend
Deadline: Must be received by March 21, 2008.
Summer Links - University of Chicago Community Service Center
Purpose: This 11-week internship supports students working for social change with a community/non-profit organization in the Chicago area.
Eligibility: All medical students welcome to apply
Funds: $4,000 stipend and subsized on-campus housing
Deadline: January 17, 2008
