Summer Research Program

The Summer Research Program is an eleven week medical research opportunity available to first year medical students. Students develop a well-defined project and work with faculty mentors throughout the summer to conduct research.  In addition to their research, students are required to attend weekly cluster meetings and seminars.  At the end of the eleven weeks, participants present their research at the Summer Research Forum. There students are graded by five judges from the clinical and basic sciences and are eligible to receive cash prizes.

The Summer Research Program has four primary funding sources: the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the National Institute on Aging (NIA), and the Pritzker School of Medicine. Each student receives a minimum stipend of $4000 for their complete participation. Approximately 70% of first year Pritzker Medical Students participate in this program each year.

The 2008 Program will kick off with a meeting and poster session on January 7th.  Application materials will be sent via e-mail to all first year medical students.

The application deadline is February 18, 2008.

Role of the Research Mentor

Our curriculum excites many of our students to ultimately pursue research projects during their time at Pritzker. So while we are not a medical school that requires research, the vast majority of students ‘vote with their feet’ in large measure because of the experience that they’ve had with the curriculum.- Holly Humphrey, MD’83, Dean for Medical Education
