MD/JD Program

Building on over twenty years of collaboration between the two schools, Pritzker School of Medicine students have the opportunity to apply for and pursue their JD at the University of Chicago Law School.

The MD and JD degrees are administered separately and require two separate admissions and financial aid applications. Interested Pritzker Applicants are encouraged to wait until their first two years of medical school to apply to the law school.

Current Pritzker School of Medicine students interested in applying for the joint MD/JD degree, should make an appointment with Dr. Shalini Reddy, Assistant Dean for Student Programs. Prospective students interested in exploring the MD/JD degree should contact the Pritzker Admissions Office.

Course of Study

If accepted to both programs, MD/JD students typically complete the first two years of medical school before taking a leave of absence to pursue their law degree. MD/JD students then return to the Pritzker School of Medicine to complete the final two clinical years of the medical degree. To help students prepare for re-entry into the medical school, MD/JD students take an intensive refresher course in physical diagnosis during the last quarter of law school. Completion of the entire program takes approximately seven years.

Alumni

Past graduates of the MD/JD program have gone on to careers in academic medicine or as legal scholars. Pritzker School of Medicine Faculty member Elmer Abbo, MD/JD is a graduate of both degree programs and is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine and a lecturer at The University of Chicago Law School.
