MeSH Program

MD/PhD Program in Medicine, the Social Sciences and Humanities (MeSA)

The University of Chicago MD/PhD Program in Medicine, the Social Sciences, and Aging (MeSA) is an exceptional opportunity for extraordinary students who seek training in medicine and a PhD within the social sciences, humanities, or related professions with a focus on aging research. This program, funded through a grant from the National Institute on Aging, is designed to prepare physician-scholars to analyze and develop creative strategies to improve the lives of older persons and to address the challenges of aging populations in the United States and globally.

As a part of the overarching MeSH Program, MeSA receives support from MeSH’s resources. The most important aspect of this support is individualized mentoring to develop and execute a plan for integrated training in medicine and the social sciences or related fields, from the time of application, to decisions about sequencing, course selection, research mentorship, and dissertation selction, to planning for residency training and beyond. The program also supports interdisciplinary coursework relevant to research in health and the social science that complements the disciplinary training obtained through the graduate programs.

Application Process

Applicants to the MeSA Program must apply to:

  • The Pritzker School of Medicine through the AMCAS process
  • The PhD program of their choosing
  • The MeSH Program (application is part of the Pritzker supplemental application)
