Description
The Pediatrics clerkship is a two-month rotation. One month is spent on an inpatient unit, which could be at Comer Children's Hospital, NorthShore University HealthSystem, or La Rabida Children's Hospital, or in the Comer Emergency Room. The other month is spent at an outpatient pediatrics office, many of which are off-site, including Evanston. For both months, we will send an email before the start of the rotation asking for location preferences and will try to accommodate them, and then will use a lottery system to determine remaining location assignments. During the outpatient month, students rotate through the newborn nursery for three days. Throughout the rotation, students meet with a faculty preceptor one time per week in small groups to discuss common pediatric problems in a case-based format. There are also weekly lectures specifically for students, weekly attending rounds, and all scheduled conferences for the residents also welcome students.
Clinical Evaluation
A student’s clinical performance is evaluated by faculty members at the inpatient and outpatient training sites where the student works. They are asked to evaluate the student in several areas, including the student’s general fund of knowledge, their proficiency in the history and physical exam, the quality of their written and oral presentation skills, deductive reasoning, communication, and professionalism.
Objectives
- To learn to evaluate pediatric patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- To learn child development from birth through adolescence.
- To comfortably and reliably perform a pediatric physical examination on any age child.
Evaluation of Clinical Clerks
- 25% NBME subject exam
- 75% Clinical Performance (30% inpatient, 30% outpatient, 10% nursery, 5% professionalism grade)
Recommended Textbooks
Any standard pediatrics text. On the chalk site, there are multiple current review articles and resources for students to refer to. In addition, the students have access to CLIPP (www.clippcases.org ), an outstanding online teaching tool that has 30 virtual pediatric cases.
