Overview

Infection with HIV is a pandemic of major public health importance. All Physicians deal with some important aspects of HIV. This course will describe:

  1. The basic Virology and immunology of HIV infection.
  2. The epidemiology of HIV both in the United States and the rest of the World.
  3. The natural history of HIV infection with the progressive immunosuppression due to the loss of CD4 cells.
  4. The clinical manifestations associated with AIDS including opportunistic infections and malignancies.
  5. HIV during pregnancy.
  6. Childhoold HIV.
  7. The basics of antiretroviral therapy.
  8. Two small group discussions help students apply their knowledge to actual clinical cases.
  9. Infectious disease faculty at the University of Chicago participate in the lectures.

Objectives

Our goal is to provide a "State of the Art" review of HIV and AIDS and introduce medical students to a fascinating field of medicine.

Evaluation

Attendance to lectures and small group discussions is expected, and completing a basic multiple-choice test is required.
