Overview
Students electing this rotation will choose a particular ethical issue in obstetrics and gynecology, research the clinical and ethical literature on this issue, examine it with regard to clinical practice and policy at University of Chicago Hospitals. By the end of the rotation the student will complete a paper outlining clinical aspects, and assessing alternative ethical positions and arguments regarding the issue. Possible issues to be examined include elective abortion, refusal of life-saving treatment, requests for treatment not medically indicated, decisions to terminate life support, confidentiality and truth-telling, research with human subjects, genetics counseling and prenatal diagnosis, sex selection, disposition of exta embryos, artificial insemination of single women, surrogacy, fetal reproduction in multiple gestation, and treatment of minors or incompetent patients.
Objectives
Provide experience for students in research setting on ethical issues in OB/GYN.
