Overview

Student will be assigned to the Pediatric Infectious Disease consultation and teaching service as an integral member of the team. Under the supervision of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Fellow and/or Attending Physician the student will obtain a history, perform an exam, gather appropriate laboratory data, develop an assessment which includes a differential diagnosis and help to develop a plan of care to be recommended to the patient's primary team. Rounds with the Attending will include discussions of the evaluation, therapy of the infectious process and interpretation of laboratory results from the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory. In addition, the student will participate in weekly conferences with the Pediatric and Adult infectious diseases staff. The student will also be expected to participate in the Special Infections in Children's Clinic, the Outpatient Clinic of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Section. The goal of the rotation is to become familiar with the pathophysiology and treatment of pediatric patient's with infectious diseases.

Objectives

Gain increasing expertise in the differential diagnosis of patient's with complicated infectious diseases. Appreciate the use and recognize the abuse of antimicrobials. Gain experience in the evaluation and treatment of common pediatric infections requiring hospitalization. Gain familiarity with commonly used Microbiology Laboratory studies. Develop an area of interest and present a 15-40 minute presentation on this topic. Become familiar with out-patient specialty Pediatric Infectious Disease Problems with emphasis on HIV/AIDS. Exposure to the intellectual process and methodology used for medical problem solving.

Evaluation

To receive a minimum grade of satisfactory the student must participate in daily rounds, contribute to patient care discussion, demonstrate a growing familiarity with Pediatric Infectious Diseases and present a topic at one of the weekly Pediatric Infectious Disease conferences.
