Overview

The student will be exposed to a variety of instructional and clinical experiences that cover the spectrum of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. The clinics include but are not restricted to Developmental and Behavioral Clinic; Hyperactivity, Inattention, and Learning Skills Clinic; Erikson Institute-Fussy Baby Program and 0-3 Diagnostic Clinic. Seminars will cover such topics as management of autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, developmental genetic disorders, early emotional development, hearing loss, learning disabilities, and attention deficit disorders. In addition, the elective will include needs and general academic schools.

Objectives

Patient Care: Demonstrate memory of basic principles that guide the provision of patient care for individuals with disability; the appropriate and effective guidelines for the promotion of health for individuals with specific conditions that result in developmental or behavioral disabilities; the methods for teaching families to prevent and to treat developmental and behavioral problems. Medical Knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of the most common developmental disabilities (CP, MR, Autism, DS, etc.) including: epidemiology and demographic trends; current best practices for treatment; need for (and limits to) work-up for etiology; relationship between inpatient and outpatient, medical and surgical, individual and population-based interventions. Practice Based Learning & Improvement: Display facility in the use of scientific evidence regarding the medical knowledge points (see above); current standards for quality improvement processes that are part of the care of individuals with developmental and behavioral disabilities; the best current methods that are employed to investigate, evaluate and improve patient care practices and safety for individuals with developmental and behavioral disabilities. Interpersonal and Communications Skills: Demonstrate an understanding of the differences between "multidisciplinary teams" and "interdisciplinary teams" and the different roles that doctors play in each; an understanding that the interpersonal and communication sills which are often seen as adjunctive to competent medical care in other settings are central and crucial to the care of children with developmental and behavioral disabilities and their families.

Evaluation

Evaluation is based on the quantity and quality of the student's participation in the experiences of the rotation (no exam).

Schedule Notes

Course not offered in the months of June-September and should not be placed in the lottery for the months June-September. Location for the first day, students will attend the Morning Report and thereafter will meet at Comer Hospital, K-145.
