Overview

This informal short course will explore correlations between radiological imaging studies and a variety of clinical cases. The emphasis will be on practical, common cases that most clinicians will encounter. We will strive to develop critical thinking skills for the integration of radiology into diagnosis and treatment using an interactive approach. The course will also take time to review basic interpretation skills for studies such as the chest radiograph, abdominal & bone radiographs and CT of the brain. In addition, suggestions for strategies & tactics for the ordering & use of radiology exams and procedures will be discussed. Students should have completed their clerkships in medicine and surgery to get the most out of this course.

Objectives

After taking this course students should be able to:

  1. Identify common tubes and catheters on a chest radiograph (CXR), their proper positions, and common complications.
  2. Identify common presentations of pneumonia, pneumothorax and pulmonary edema on CXR.
  3. Identify and describe some common fractures and fracture complications on bone radiographs.
  4. Identify free air, bowel obstruction, and ileus on abdominal radiographs.
  5. Identify common hemorrhage patterns in and around the brain, stroke, herniation patterns, mass lesions, and hydrocephalus on brain CT & MRI.
  6. Discuss imaging strategies for suspected cholecystitis, obstructing urinary stones, aortic pathology and pulmonary embolism.
  7. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in the application and integration of radiologic imaging in some common clinical problems for better patient care.

Evaluation

  1. A practical exam using imaging studies of the conditions listed in objectives will be given at the end of the course, as well as
  2. short, informal quizzes at the end of each section.
  3. Students will also ebe evaluated based on attendence and class participation.
