Overview
This course is intended to provide a broad overview on key issues in global public health. It will be taught as a seminar where students are asked to serve as discussion leaders and introduce key topics and concepts drawn from the assigned readings. The emphasis will be on discussion and critical analysis. Grades will be based on attendance and participation.
The readings will include articles and book chapters along with select "case studies" focusing on particular interventions or initiatives. Topics to be discussed include, communicable disease control, global public health financing, chronic illnesses, reproductive health, epidemic management, and ethical issues in global health.
Objectives
After taking this course, students should have an understanding of the broader issues in global public health and have a critical approach to analyzing these issues. Students are expected to gain an appreciation for the tradeoffs inherent in public health decisions.
Evaluation
Grading will be based on three parameters:
1. Level of engagement and in-class participation during the seminar
2. Attendance
3. Depth of preparation of the individual student-led sessions
