Overview

This course is directed to fourth-year medical students who desire more knowledge regarding acute cardiac care. The topics to be considered include the general principles in the management of complicated patients with acute myocardial infarction, shock, unstable ischemic syndromes, congestive heart failure, and cardiac arrhythmias. Discussions will include the principles of pulmonary artery catheter measurements, interactions between respiration and circulation, thrombolytic therapy, interventional techniques (including primary percutaneous transluminal coronary artery dilatation, rotablation, atherectomy, stents, the complications of myocardial infarction and management of the postinfarction electrophysiology mechanisms and concepts in electrocardiography will be reviewed. An intellectual construct for dealing with supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias as well as conduction disturbances will be emphasized. The rationale for latest approach as to therapy including ablation, the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator; pacemakers and antiarrhythmic drugs will be discussed. Ample time will be provided for discussion.

Objectives

Mechanisms will be used to construct an intellectual framework for the practice of cardiology in a manner intended to help students prepare for their internship. The approach is to move from basic concepts to the bedside.

Evaluation

Class participation, attendance, and take home examination.
