Overview
The course can be used for a clinical elective experience in a community-based setting (i.e., primary care med-peds practice at the 47th Street Office), and also for students who want to combine some clinical exposure with more community-based services and advocacy by working with community organizations such as the Chicago Youth Program. Examples of the latter can include the conduct of a needs assessment or development of referral resources for the community-based free clinic run by Pritzker Medical Students at CYP. Students will discuss their goals with the instructor and decide together on specific objectives and activities for the elective.
Objectives
Describe demographic characteristics of the population served in the chosen community. Give several examples of interactions between socio-economic factors and health for the population served. Develop familiarity with services and resources available to patients/families in the community served. Consider strategies (idividual and systemic) for improving access to care and health outcomes in the community served.
Evaluation
Evaluation will vary depending upon the student's chosen activities -rotations involving more clinical activities will be evaluated through observation, feedback and discussion within the clinical setting, while students choosing a more service-based experience will have their performance evaluated through discussion and assessment of their project or product (i.e., written needs assessment or compilation of referral resources). A half-day continuity clinic per week with participation in associated community-based curriculum for three months will earn 50 credits and a full-time clinical rotation for one month will earn 100 credits.
