Overview
Infection with HIV is a pandemic of major public health importance. All Physicians deal with some important aspects of HIV. This course will describe:
- The basic Virology and immunology of HIV infection.
- The epidemiology of HIV both in the United States and the rest of the World.
- The natural history of HIV infection with the progressive immunosuppression due to the loss of CD4 cells.
- The clinical manifestations associated with AIDS including opportunistic infections and malignancies.
- HIV during pregnancy.
- Childhoold HIV.
- The basics of antiretroviral therapy.
- Two small group discussions help students apply their knowledge to actual clinical cases.
- Infectious disease faculty at the University of Chicago participate in the lectures.
Objectives
Our goal is to provide a "State of the Art" review of HIV and AIDS and introduce medical students to a fascinating field of medicine.
Evaluation
Attendance to lectures and small group discussions is expected, and completing a basic multiple-choice test is required.
