Overview

Recent and classic papers in Cancer Biology will be discussed by the group. Discussions will emphasize experimental reasoning, methodology, and interpretation, and results. Students will close the course by presenting a paper-lecture.

Objectives

Students with no research experience beginning to work in laboratories should understand the basic concepts of Cancer Biology, (Oncogenes, Tumor Suppressors, DNA damage/repair, cell cycle regulation and checkpoints, Signal Transduction Pathways, Genome Regulation. Students should also understand the logic of experimental methodology, and be able to evaluate data critically.

Evaluation

Topics and papers for discussion will be assigned by the instructor. Students will come prepare to discuss the paper in experimental detail. Final presentations will be worked out between the student and instructor. Discussions will be evaluate on attendance, preparation, and contirbution to discussion. Final paper evaluated on preparation, clarity, and scientific rigor. One half class participation; one half presentation at the end of the Quarter.
