Overview

This course is offered to fourth year medical students and focuses on the fundamentals of pediatric ophthalmology. Through observation, patient examination, observation of pediatric ophthalmology cases, and conferences in the outpatient department, students will participate in the diagnosis and management of patients.

Students will rotate at DCAM, Comer, Mercy Hospital and other off-site clinics.

Objectives

To provide students with a variety of opportunities to learn the fundamentals of pediatric ophthalmology. By the end of the elective, the student should be able to perform ophthalmoscopy in pediatrics and recognize, cataracts, strabismus and amblyopia.

Evaluation

The student will be evaluated on their ability to do the following: ophthalmoscopy, knowledge of the diagnoses of pediatric cataract, nasolacrinial obstruction, and strabismus. Students will be expected to present a case during grand rounds at the end of rotation.
