Overview
Student would work on the palliative care service. This service provides palliative care consults to patient's in the hospital and also directs support services to families who have lost children. Goals of the elective are to have a better understanding of pediatric palliative care, learn palliative pain management, and learn how to talk to families about death/dying. Responsibilities include: seeing consults, participating in the support groups during one month, and examining some aspect of pediatric palliative care indepth.
Objectives
To teach students how to recognize which pediatric patients would benefit from pediatric palliative care. To teach some basic pain management techniques to this age group. To demonstrate to students appropriate ways to discuss death/dying with families. To familiarize students to family support groups.
Evaluation
The student will be evaluated on their ability to collect data for consults, interact with patients and family members during consults, support groups, daily interactions. The student will also present information on a topic of their choice at the end of the month.

Schedule Notes
Schedule: Rounds and consults would take about 2 hours a day and the time would vary depending on the timing of consults. We also anticipate one support group per week which would be 2 hours. Average hours/week 15. No call schedule
