Overview

Student will attend Pediatric Rheumatology Clinic, Orthopaedic Clinic, Sports Medicine Clinic, Neurology EMG Clinic, Podiatry Clinic, and Psychiatry Clinic. Student will be given readings specific for the appropriate musculoskeletal topics. The student will be given an opportunity to see patients with a wide variety of pediatric musculoskeletal diseases as well as to evaluate new patients. No inpatient responsibilities are part of the rotation, only outpatient.

Objectives

Perform a screening musculoskeletal exam on pediatric patients (two weeks) and to perform the complete musculoskeletal exam in a child and adolescent of all ages (four weeks). Recognize juvenile arthritis and lupus and describe their treatment pyramid. Describe five (5) common orthopaedic conditions seen in children and how they are diagnosed. Describe screening and evaluation of scoliosis. Recognize the common sports injuries in children and adolescents and how to diagnose them. Recognize common podiatric problems seen at LaRabida Clinics. Identify the common pediatric myopathies and usefullness of EMG and muscle biopsy. Recognize when and when not to refer a child to a musculoskeletal disease specialist.

Evaluation

The student will be evaluated and graded by the ACGME Guidelines for medical knowledge, patient care, practice-based learning, interpersonal and communications skills, professionalism, and system-based practice. Rheumatology (Dr. Karen Onel) will be responsible for the condition of the evaluation.

Schedule Notes

The schedule will be finalized once the student begins the rotation. Students may, with permission, reduce the couse to 2 weeks at 50 credits. Arrange specific dates with Evelyn Simpson
