Overview

  1. Independent Study on web sites, reading assignments and dedicated medical student teaching files.
  2. Film reading in clinical area with direct discussion of interpretation with attending and resident staff.
  3. Attendance to noon conference daily and dedicated section teaching conferences held in specific sections (schedule will be provided).

Objectives

  • To better understand the role of the radiologist and how radiology is integrated into patient care.
  • To learn preferred ordering practices - how to utilize radiology imaging to achieve better patient care.
  • How are specific radiology exams performed, relative advantages and limitations.
  • Patient preparation required and patient experience.
  • Possible contra-indications? Morbidity and mortality issues?

Please note: This course is not intended to teach film interpretation - but to emphasize the radiologist role in patient care and what is the expectations of the referring staff in this consultant environment. To address issues of team patient care, what is most time-efficient or cost effective in treating various clinical problems.

Evaluation

See description below of exam and requirements to create a case teaching file.

Also, credit is determined by:

  1. Meeting the stated objectives, creation of the teaching file and completion of the reading material as measured by a short exam.
  2. Proper return of the books that are borrowed and completion of the evaluation and course paperwork.
  3. Input from clinical faculty and housestaff.

Schedule Notes

This course is offered during the first half of the month (1st through 15th). Students may, with permission, extend the coure to 1 month at 100 credits.
A specific schedule and weekly calendar will be provided when checking into the course. This will provide a map, objectives, suggested rotation of clinical experience in the reading rooms, reading assignments, online teaching files and an end of rotation exam based on the material to be covered. Exceptions to the above can be discussed with the course director prior to the rotation start.
All students taking the 4 week course will be expected to prepare a teaching file to be prepared with a mentor (faculty or resident). All students who are from a visiting school will be assigned a resident mentor to ensure assimilation.

Course Limitations and Prerequisites

Maximum Students Enrolled: 5 - Minimum. Course will be cancelled if fewer than five students enroll. An email will be sent one week prior to the scheduled start date confirming that the course will be held.
