Overview

Designed for first and second year students, this course provides the unique opportunity to explore the field of general surgery. Students will learn how to read and present articles, which will provide a foundation for future surgical education. Furthermore, students will be able to participate in the operating room and simultaneously gain exposure to cutting edge technique and instrumentation. In addition, the flexibility of the preceptorship affords the chance to assist in a variety of procedures and also observe other surgeons at work. Attending guest lectures and department events will allow the student to discover the academic environment of surgery. Moreover, this course extends the opportunity to participate in the Summer Research Program. The student will learn the process of creating a medical presentation, which may subsequently lead to publication. Most importantly, first and second year students will have the rare opportunity to develop long standing relationships with faculty members.

Objectives

Learn how to read and present surgical articles. To become accustomed to the operating room and surgical procedures. Attend guest lectures and department events.

Students evaluated by instructor through participation and discussion.
