1st & 2nd Year Elective Courses 2008

First Year Spring Elective Requirement

100 units of elective credit is required in the spring quarter of the first year of medical study. To fulfill this requirement, students can select elective courses and/or the option of sponsored independent study. Additionally, students who will participate in the Summer Research Program will apply a minimum of 50 units gained from their preparatory requirement towards the spring elective requirement.

For every 100 credits that students elect to take, they should anticipate spending a minimum of 10 hours per week on that elective. Students may take more than 100 credits. All courses are graded pass/fail.

Students wishing to take courses outside the Biological Sciences Division must obtain approval from the Associate Dean for Medical School Education, Halina Brukner, MD. Elective courses may be taken outside the BSD for a pass/fail grade with instructor approval; otherwise, grades will be given under the grading system of that division or school.

Elective Courses

To register for a first year elective course use the Elective Drop/Add Forms (PDF) and obtain a signature from the department or the faculty offering the course. Return the signed form to David Zupko, BSLC 104Q.

Readings, Research and Independent Study Preceptorships

First year students can also fulfill their spring elective requirement by taking a Readings, Research course or an Independent Study preceptorship. Students need to locate and make project arrangements directly with a sponsoring faculty member.

To register for Readings, Research and Independent Study courses use the Preceptorship/Independent Study Proposal (PDF). The proposal form needs to be signed by the sponsoring faculty member and returned to David Zupko, BSLC 104Q. A description of the research or project needs to accompany the signed proposal. The proposal will then be reviewed to determine the number of units it will receive. Please allow 3-5 business days for review and results to be communicated.

Clinical Skills are taught in a stepwise curriculum throughout the four years. Students begin in the first quarter learning how to communicate with patients, begin to learn a physical examination and put it all together with clinical knowledge and clinical reasoning so by the end of their second year they are ready to get on the wards and being a part of the care teams that are taking care of patients. - Will Harper, MD, Course Director, Clinical Skills Sequence
