Overview

Students will spend 4-5 half days per week in the Med-Peds practice evaluating adult and pediatric patients under the supervision of Med-Peds residents and faculty. They will evaluate urgent, continuity, and preventive care patients. Additionally, students will attend ambulatory and quality improvement lectures 3 half days per week in the department of Medicine. Students may choose to spend one or two additional half days per week at a specialty clinic of their choice. Popular clinics are the joint injection and pediatric sports medicine clinics. One to two half days per week will be spent working on a small quality improvement project under the supervision of faculty.

Objectives

  1. Perform complete histories and physical examinations on ambulatory patients, present the patients to residents and faculty and come up with an independent assessment and plan for the patients.
  2. Indicate where to find the ACIP recommendations for vaccination of children and adults and utilize the recommendations in ordering vaccines for these patients.
  3. Indicate where to find the ADA standards for the care of persons with diabetes and apply these standards to ambulatory patients with diabetes.
  4. Indicate where to find screening recommendations for children and adults and apply these guidelines to ambulatory patients.
  5. Indicate where to find the NIH guidelines for caring for persons with Asthma and apply these guidelines caring for ambulatory patients with asthma.

Evaluation

The course director will meet with the student to provide formal feedback halfway through the rotation and again at the end of the rotation. An evaluation form summarizing this feedback will be completed and submitted to the student's medical school. REQUIRED QI PROJECT.
